Cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, also known as black-eyed or southern pea belongs to the genus vigna, section Catiang,species Unguiculata.
Cowpea originated in Africa and is widely grown in Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and in the southern United States.

Cowpea is grain legume grown in savanna regions of the tropics and subtropics. The majority is grown in west and central African countries. Cowpea has a high protein content of about 23% and can adapt to different types of soils.
